What You Need to Know
Reminders:
- Please send your child in their PE kit on Fridays (swimming kit in a bag on Wednesdays).
- PE kit is a plain white t-shirt with dark trainers or pumps, and blue or black shorts. Plain black or blue tracksuit bottoms may be worn in the winter.
- On Wednesdays, we have swimming lessons, so don’t forget to bring your kit and a towel!
- Homework will be given on Fridays to reflect the week’s learning.
- Children will also practice spellings for the Grand Spell each Friday.
-
Reading books will be changed when the children have read them and they have been signed by an adult. Please make sure the children are reading regularly to practise their skills. We encourage all our children to read for at least 10 minutes every day outside of the classroom.
Y4 Multiplication Check - June 2026
In Year 4, the children complete a multiplication check test. This will be completed on a tablet/iPad and it consists of the children answering 25 times tables facts (multiplication only) with 6 seconds to answer each one. There is no pass or fail mark but the children should be constantly learning and revising their times tables up to 12 times 12 as much as possible. Children will be practising in school on TT Rock Stars and they will be completing the 'Soundcheck' option, as this is timed just like the multiplication check. If they could also practise at home on TT Rock Stars, this would be a great help!
Year 4 Autumn Curriculum Overview:
Religion - This term in RE, we are learning from the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible. We are exploring the special messages God sent through angels to Mary and Joseph, and what these stories tell Christians about trust, faith, and God’s plan.
We are learning how the angel visited Mary to tell her she would have baby Jesus, and how the angel later visited Joseph in a dream to help him understand that Mary’s baby was special and sent by God. These stories help us think about listening to God and doing the right thing, even when it feels difficult.
We are also learning about the Kingdom of God. We will develop a simple understanding that the Kingdom of God is not a place on a map, but is about God’s way of living — showing love, kindness, forgiveness, and fairness to others.
English - This term in English, children will be reading The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy, a magical story about a girl called Jub who goes on a journey to bring back the happy endings that have been stolen. Through reading and discussing the story, children will develop their understanding of characters, settings and plot, as well as build their vocabulary and comprehension skills. They will make predictions, talk about how characters feel, and explore how stories are structured. By the end of the unit, the children will use their learning to write their own alternative ending to the story, thinking carefully about how to keep the characters and setting the same while creating a new and imaginative conclusion.
Maths - Pupils will be multiplying by 2-digit and 3-digit number. They will build on their understanding of multiplication and division by learning how to use times tables, arrays, grouping, and sharing to solve problems. Children will practise using different methods, including drawings, number lines and written strategies, to help them explain their thinking. They will also solve word problems, helping them to apply their maths to real-life situations and deepen their understanding of how multiplication and division are connected.
