What You Need to Know
Reminders:
- Please send your child in their PE kit on Fridays (swimming kit in a bag on Wednesdays).
- PE kit is a plain white t-shirt with dark trainers or pumps, and blue or black shorts. Plain black or blue tracksuit bottoms may be worn in the winter.
- On Wednesdays, we have swimming lessons, so don’t forget to bring your kit and a towel!
- Homework will be given on Fridays to reflect the week’s learning.
- Children will also practice spellings for the Grand Spell each Friday.
-
Reading books will be changed when the children have read them and they have been signed by an adult. Please make sure the children are reading regularly to practise their skills. We encourage all our children to read for at least 10 minutes every day outside of the classroom.
Y4 Multiplication Check - June 2026
In Year 4, the children complete a multiplication check test. This will be completed on a tablet/iPad and it consists of the children answering 25 times tables facts (multiplication only) with 6 seconds to answer each one. There is no pass or fail mark but the children should be constantly learning and revising their times tables up to 12 times 12 as much as possible. Children will be practising in school on TT Rock Stars and they will be completing the 'Soundcheck' option, as this is timed just like the multiplication check. If they could also practise at home on TT Rock Stars, this would be a great help!
Year 4 Autumn Curriculum Overview:
Religion - We are learning all about Creation and Covenant. We are exploring how God created the world and everything in it, and how this shows us His love and care. We are also learning about the special promises, or covenants, that God made with His people, such as Noah, Abraham, and Moses. These stories help us understand how God has been guiding and looking after His people throughout history.
English - In English this autumn term, we will be exploring an alternative version of the story of Cinderella. We will think about how the story could be told in different ways and use our imagination to write our own ending. We will also be working on character descriptions, learning how to describe what characters are like and how they feel, as well as practising how to use speech correctly in our writing. Later in the term. we will be exploring performance poetry.
Maths - We will be kicking off this year with Place Value. In Year 4, during Autumn Term 1, children following the White Rose Maths scheme focus first on Place Value, learning to represent, partition and order numbers up to 10,000, use number lines, round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000, and read and write Roman numerals. They then move on to Addition and Subtraction, developing formal written methods for calculations with up to four-digit numbers, including regrouping, and applying these to one- and two-step problems. The next unit introduces Area, where pupils learn that area is the measure of a surface, calculate it by counting squares, and explore shapes with equal areas.
