What We Are Learning About - Autumn 1

Religion

This half term in Religious Education, the children will be exploring how Creation is described in the Bible. We will look at two key passages: the Creation story in Genesis and the opening of John’s Gospel.

Rather than focusing on how the world was physically made, pupils will explore the deeper meaning behind these ancient stories. They will learn how early writers used stories to explain big ideas about God’s kindness, human choices, and what happens when pride gets in the way. The children will also reflect on how these religious beliefs fit alongside what they learn in Science. Finally, we will look at how Christians view Jesus as a key part of God's Creation and how He reveals God's love to the world.

English

At the beginning of this term we will be reading the book “Holes” by Louis Sachar. The children will full immersed into the text  through a range of activities and will be writing a letter home at the end of our writing journey. We will also be reading “Running My Own Race” and working on our reading skills through a variety of methods, focusing on the retrieval and inference style questioning.

Maths

We begin the year focusing on the foundational skill of place value. The children will continue to improve their knowledge of number though manipulation of number when partitioning, reading and writing number, round and working with the powers of 10. We will use this knowledge and apply it to a variety of question styles, concentrating first on fluency and then progressing on to reasoning and problem solving questions. As always we promote oracy in this subject and the children will be using this skill to explain to their peers, how and why they have used methods, ultimately furthering and imbedding their learning.

Each week the children are given and expected to complete the follwoing homeworks:

• Maths practice test
• Reading homework
• SPAG homework
• Spelling homework
  
  Children are also expected to read and practise their times tables every night.

Please send your child in their PE kit on Fridays for PE lessons. PE kit is a plain white t-shirt with dark trainers or pumps, and blue or black shorts. Plain black or blue tracksuit bottoms may be worn in the winter.

Please also provide your child with a hooded coat so they can stay warm during playtime.
